Theft has emerged as the most frequently reported crime in the Maldives so far this year, according to the latest data released by the Maldives Police Service. Out of a total of 5,226 reported cases, theft accounts for 1,492 investigated incidents, marking a significant challenge for local law enforcement.

Statistical records indicate that road accidents represent the second most common issue, with 1,380 cases reported. Other notable categories include 867 drug-related offenses, 448 reports of lost property, and 289 cases of assault. The data further details 275 instances of property damage, 154 domestic violence reports, 116 cases of embezzlement, 108 sexual abuse cases, 76 robberies, and 21 reports of fraud.

A monthly breakdown reveals that criminal activity peaked in January with 1,108 reported cases. While numbers showed a slight decline through February (953), March (966), and April (874), the figure rose again in May to 1,049 cases. Thus far in June, 125 cases have been officially recorded.

In response to these figures, authorities are intensifying efforts to bolster community security and reduce traffic accidents. The Maldives Police Service continues to conduct a series of awareness programs across the country, urging the public to take proactive safety measures and remain vigilant against criminal activity.
