The State Electric Company (STELCO) has announced that household electricity bills for the upcoming month of Ramadan will not exceed MVR 400. This initiative follows a decision by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to introduce a special discount for the holy month.

STELCO conveyed this information via a post on X (formerly Twitter) today. The company stated that a separate electricity bill would be issued for Ramadan specifically to implement this discount for domestic consumers.

Meter Readings Scheduled

To facilitate the generation of this dedicated Ramadan bill, STELCO has scheduled meter readings to be taken on 16 and 17 February. The company has appealed to all its customers to provide their full cooperation during this period.

Broader Ramadan Initiatives

The electricity bill cap is part of a series of government initiatives aimed at easing financial burdens on households during Ramadan. President Muizzu’s administration has also decided to provide discounts on water bills for the holy month. Furthermore, each household is slated to receive a complimentary case of canned fish. The government is also actively working to stabilise food prices, ensuring affordability and accessibility for citizens throughout Ramadan.
