The Ministry of Environment has held high-level consultative sessions with key stakeholders to review and finalize draft amendments to the national Net Metering Regulation.

The consultation, convened at Meerumaa Hall, brought together representatives from government institutions, utility providers, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector. The session was designed to gather diverse feedback and technical expertise before the finalization of the updated regulatory framework.

Originally introduced in 2015, the Net Metering Regulation facilitates consumer investment in renewable energy systems for self-generation. Under this framework, households and businesses can determine their own level of energy production and export any surplus electricity back to the local utility grid.

According to the Ministry, the primary objective of the meeting was to identify and address the practical and technical challenges encountered during the implementation of the current rules. By strengthening the regulation, the government aims to streamline processes for renewable energy users and eliminate existing barriers to the advancement of the Maldives’ energy sector.
