MALÉ, Maldives – Soneva Secret, a luxury resort in the Maldives, has successfully completed the installation of a floating solar photovoltaic (PV) system in its surrounding waters. The project represents a significant stride towards reducing the resort’s reliance on fossil fuels and promoting eco-friendly energy within the nation’s tourism sector.
The system, developed in collaboration with China’s GCL and Ocean Sun, is designed to substantially decrease the resort’s operational costs and environmental footprint associated with diesel consumption. It marks a notable advancement for Maldivian resorts committed to sustainable energy transitions.
Project Impact and Specifications
The newly commissioned floating solar PV system is expected to yield considerable environmental and economic benefits:
- Solar Panels: The system comprises over 4,200 solar panels, specifically engineered for the marine environment.
- Fuel Savings: It is projected to save approximately one million litres of diesel annually.
- Renewable Energy Provision: The system is anticipated to meet 90 per cent of the resort’s annual electricity requirements using renewable energy sources.
- Emissions Reduction: Annual carbon dioxide emissions are expected to decrease by over 2,000 tonnes.
The solar panels utilise specialised technology to ensure durability and resilience against saltwater, waves, and strong winds. Key features include rust-proof frames, robust glass components, and waterproof junction boxes, all designed to withstand the harsh marine conditions.
This initiative is considered a major advancement in the Maldives’ broader objective to transition its resorts to “net-zero” operations, aligning with global sustainability goals.
