Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam has expressed a strong vision for the Maldives to achieve autonomy in marine research, emphasizing the need for local experts to lead scientific exploration within the nation’s vast maritime territory.

Speaking as the guest of honor at the opening ceremony of the sixth Maldives Marine Science Symposium, Minister Shiyam highlighted President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to evidence-based governance. He noted that these strategic policies are designed to facilitate the sustainable use of marine resources through scientific innovation and data-driven decision-making.

The Minister stressed that for a large ocean state like the Maldives, enhancing national scientific capacity is as critical as expanding knowledge of marine biodiversity. He stated that while international partnerships remain vital, the ultimate goal is to empower Maldivians to take full ownership of marine research initiatives.

“Our objective is to transform marine research into an area where Maldivians possess sovereign capability,” the Minister remarked. He further noted that current investments in scientific talent are essential for cultivating the next generation of researchers and leaders dedicated to preserving the Maldives’ most valuable natural asset—the ocean.
