Mohamed Shakeel, the former Managing Director of the Maldives Hajj Corporation, has committed to fostering an inclusive environment for dialogue with all political parties if appointed to the Elections Commission (EC). Speaking during his interview with the Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions, Shakeel emphasized the need for broader engagement and consultation across the political spectrum.

During the committee stage, Shakeel noted that while the Maldives possesses a transparent electoral system by global standards, friction often arises due to inadequate communication regarding the Commission’s decisions and actions. He pledged that, if confirmed, he would ensure timely information sharing and actively listen to the concerns of all stakeholders to bridge existing gaps.

Shakeel further argued that the primary objective of the Elections Commission should not be the penalization of political parties. Instead, he stated that the institution must focus on facilitating political activities within the legal framework and enhancing public awareness regarding electoral regulations and procedures.

Addressing his previous tenure at the EC, Shakeel clarified that his past resignation was prompted by an environment that restricted his ability to work independently. He reaffirmed his commitment to institutional integrity, stating he would not hesitate to resign again if he felt unable to perform his duties with full autonomy in the future.

The nomination of Mohamed Shakeel follows the resignation of former EC member Mohamed Zahid. Shakeel brings extensive experience to the role, having previously served as the Commission’s Director General from 2013 to 2014 and as a member of the Commission until 2018.
