The Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, has characterized the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) as the primary architect of political unrest and instability in the Maldives. Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, Minister Saeed alleged that the party is willing to undertake any action, regardless of its impact on the nation, to achieve narrow political gains.

Minister Saeed highlighted several instances to support his claims, including past calls for tourism boycotts and previous incidents of arson in the capital, Malé. He asserted that these actions were orchestrated under the direct instructions of MDP’s leadership, citing them as evidence of the party’s historical inclination toward civil disorder.

In contrast, the Minister emphasized that the administration of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu remains committed to transparency and democratic principles. He condemned recent efforts by the opposition to defame the President, labeling such tactics as a “low-level” attempt to undermine the country’s leadership despite the government’s openness to democratic competition.

The Minister’s comments come as the MDP and the People’s National Front (PNF) continue to hold a series of street protests. Saeed noted that these demonstrations have faced public criticism due to their disruptive nature and the use of inflammatory language. He concluded by noting that calls are intensifying from both the public and internal party members for the opposition to cease these unproductive activities.
