Male’, Maldives – As the Maldives gears up for the holy month of Ramadan, prices of essential goods in Male’s market have seen a significant decrease, bringing relief to consumers. The most notable price drops have been observed in onions, eggs, and coconuts.
Last week, onions were being sold at prices ranging between MVR 20 and MVR 30 per kilogram. Now, they are available for MVR 18 per kilogram in stores across Male’ and Hulhumale’. Similarly, the price of chicken eggs has also declined, dropping from MVR 2.50 to MVR 2.00 per egg in most stores.
Coconuts, a staple in Maldivian households, have seen one of the most significant price reductions. Previously sold between MVR 10 and MVR 35 at the Travelers’ Market, coconuts are now available for just MVR 5.
Government Ensures Price Stability During Ramadan
The Economic Ministry has assured the public that special measures are being taken to prevent price hikes during Ramadan. The Ministry, in collaboration with the State Trading Organization (STO), has implemented policies to regulate the market and maintain stable prices.
Economic Minister Saeed previously stated that a policy has been formulated under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s guidance to control prices effectively. As part of this initiative, a list of essential household items has been compiled to monitor and manage potential price fluctuations.
“This list includes 183 items, of which 54 have been identified as critical for Ramadan. If prices of these essential goods rise significantly, the government will intervene in the market to ensure affordability,” Minister Saeed stated.
STO Boosts Supply of Essential Goods
In preparation for Ramadan, STO has arranged the import of a large stock of essential goods, ensuring they remain available at lower-than-market prices. These include:
- Basic food items: onions, eggs, potatoes, coconuts, and dates
- Fresh vegetables and fruits: tomatoes, ginger, lime, carrots, oranges, cabbage, chilies, cucumber, pumpkin, mango, and passion fruit
- Processed foods: Nestle cream, cocoa powder, baked beans, and canned milk
- Cooking essentials: sunflower oil, vegetable oil, and basmati rice
With these measures in place, Maldivian households can expect more affordable prices and stable supplies during the upcoming Ramadan, ensuring a smooth and stress-free preparation for the holy month.
