President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized that investing in the health and well-being of the youth is essential for the sustainability of the nation’s future healthcare system as the proportion of elderly citizens continues to rise.

In a formal address marking World Population Day, President Muizzu highlighted the importance of establishing healthy habits during one’s youth. He noted that such lifestyles serve as a preventative measure against chronic illnesses and delay the onset of age-related health complications.

The President further underscored the significance of prioritizing a ‘Care Economy.’ He stated that this focus ensures high-quality care for the elderly while alleviating the unpaid caregiving burden currently borne by families, particularly women. According to the President, this approach allows senior citizens to live with dignity and facilitates their continued participation in the productive workforce.

Noting that youth comprise 39 percent of the Maldivian population, the President reiterated that providing quality education and employment opportunities remains a top government priority. Under the ‘Maldives 2.0’ vision, the administration is moving forward with building a digital economy and modernizing public services.

Addressing policy development, President Muizzu stressed the necessity of accurate, up-to-date statistics for national planning. He announced that the 2030 Census will be conducted via a ‘hybrid’ system, integrating administrative records with traditional census methods to improve data collection efficiency and reduce state expenditure.
