President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has formally submitted the names of two candidates to the People’s Majlis for membership in the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM). The nominations were made to fill a seat that is set to become vacant in October.
The nominees presented for parliamentary approval are Al-Usthaza Samaau Ahmed Najeeb and Sham’oon Hameed. Samaau Ahmed Najeeb is currently serving as a member of the commission, with her present term scheduled to expire on October 3. The second nominee, Sham’oon Hameed, is a seasoned professional who has previously served as the Secretary General of the HRCM and held several other senior positions within the organization.
The President’s Office opened applications for the HRCM membership in July. Following a review of the applicants, the President selected these two qualified individuals for parliamentary consideration. The names have now been forwarded to the Parliament’s Gender and Human Rights Committee for further review.
A final decision on the appointments will be made following the committee’s evaluation and a subsequent vote on the floor of the Parliament.
