President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu today urged Maldivian creators and entrepreneurs to establish a global presence through the digital economy following the official launch of PayPal services in the Maldives.

Speaking at the ceremony held to introduce the service, the President highlighted that this launch fulfills a significant pledge made to the citizens. He noted that the previous belief that the Maldives’ small size would prevent access to international financial platforms has been proven wrong, removing a major barrier for local youth to earn income by selling products internationally.

The President described the integration of PayPal as more than just a service launch; it is a vital component of a broader economic diversification project aimed at transforming the Maldives into a developed nation by 2040. The government has set a target for the digital economy to account for at least 15 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030.

To achieve this, the President emphasized the development of advanced technological infrastructure, including the installation of the “Dhivar” submarine cable in partnership with Google. He remarked that while past generations connected with the world via sea routes, the current generation is linked through digital networks.

Furthermore, the government is working to provide dedicated spaces for creators. A modern “Creator Hub” featuring professional studios is scheduled to open on November 11 this year, with plans to establish similar centers across the atolls. The President concluded by calling on the public to seize these golden opportunities to showcase Maldivian innovation to the world.
