President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the administration is working to submit a Recall Vote Bill during the current parliamentary term. Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, he emphasized the importance of empowering citizens within a democratic framework.

The President stated that a robust democracy should grant the public the authority to remove members of the People’s Majlis and local councils if they fail to uphold their responsibilities during their tenure. He noted that recall mechanisms are successfully implemented in various democratic nations and confirmed that technical consultations are currently underway to adapt this system for the Maldives.

Furthermore, President Muizzu highlighted potential reforms to the electoral system, including the possibility of holding multiple elections on a single day and introducing a preferential voting system. He stressed that any changes must ensure transparency and stability, particularly regarding the transition to a single-round presidential election system.

The President concluded by advocating for meritocracy in elected offices, urging for candidates with high educational qualifications and experience. He also called for greater public dialogue on ensuring the inclusion of women, youth, and persons with disabilities in the nation’s decision-making processes.
