President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Commander-in-Chief of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), has officially inaugurated the new Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) building in Villimale. The facility is set to serve as the nation’s primary hub for coordinating responses to maritime disasters and emergencies.

Developed with financial assistance from the Government of Japan, the MRCC is designed to centralize and streamline maritime safety operations. The MNDF noted that the new infrastructure will significantly expand the Coast Guard’s operational capacity and enhance the safety of those at sea.

While the project’s foundation was laid in June 2022, construction faced several delays until it was fast-tracked under the current administration’s priority to modernize military capabilities. The state-of-the-art facility features a modern operations command room, specialized training classrooms, and a large auditorium for staff development.

The center’s establishment was supported by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), with the Australian Government providing essential technical equipment and resources. The MRCC has been a vital component of national security since its renaming in 2012, having responded to over 3,700 incidents and saving 8,359 lives over the past decade.
