President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed attended the official flag-hoisting ceremony this morning to commemorate the Maldives’ National Day. The event took place at 6:00 AM at Republic Square.
The President and First Lady were accompanied by Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef and several senior government officials. Upon their arrival at Republic Square, they were formally received by the Minister of Defence, Hassan Rashid, and the Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, Heena Waleed.
The ceremony featured the ceremonial hoisting of the national flag, followed by a special prayer offered to mark the significance of the occasion. The proceedings concluded with the performance of the National Anthem by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) band.
National Day is celebrated annually in the Maldives on the 1st of Rabi’ al-Awwal. It honors the victory of Sultan Al-Ghazee Mohamed Thakurufaanu Al-Auzam, who liberated the Maldives from Portuguese colonial rule in the 16th century.
