President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially announced changes to the administrative jurisdictions within Addu Atoll, designating Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo as separate inhabited islands. This presidential decree follows a public referendum conducted last October.

Referendum Outcome

A public referendum, which sought opinions on the potential separation of Feydhoo, Hulhudhoo, and Meedhoo from Addu City, was held on 25 October. The results indicated that residents of Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo voted in favour of separating from Addu City, while Feydhoo opted to remain under Addu City’s jurisdiction.

Presidential Decree

The President’s Office confirmed today that, in response to the referendum results, President Muizzu has redefined Addu City’s boundaries. Consequently, Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo, which were previously part of Addu City’s administrative area, are now recognised as two distinct inhabited islands.

Legal Framework

The responsibility for defining the jurisdictions of city councils and island councils within all administrative divisions of the Maldives is vested in the President. This authority is exercised under the Decentralisation Act, which governs the administration of the country’s administrative divisions.
