Malé – Police have launched a crackdown on illegal tobacco production facilities in the capital, Malé.

A police media official confirmed to Maldives Insight that operations are currently underway following reports of illegal cigarette manufacturing.

Authorities stated that they are searching a private office inside a residence in Henveiru under a court-issued warrantafter receiving information about unauthorized cigarette production at the location.

Importing equipment for tobacco production is strictly prohibited in the Maldives. However, sources indicate that following the recent increase in cigarette duty, illicit cigarette manufacturing has become more common in parts of Malé.

Police have yet to disclose further details regarding the ongoing operation.
