Malé, Maldives — The Maldives Police Service has confirmed that an officer was injured while attempting to intervene in an assault carried out by two individuals on a motorcycle near Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
The incident was reported around 8:40 PM, with the victim being attacked using an iron rod. Police stated that the injured individual, a male, was promptly taken to IGMH, where treatment began immediately. However, specific details regarding the extent of his injuries have not been disclosed.
A video circulating on social media shows a police officer attempting to stop the altercation and sustaining an ankle injury, with visible blood from the wound. A police spokesperson confirmed to “Dhen” that the officer was injured while actively trying to break up the fight.
As of now, no arrests have been made, but the police have assured that the investigation is ongoing.
This incident comes amid a surge in assaults reported in the Malé area over the past two to three weeks. Just yesterday, another violent altercation occurred among expatriates at Thaasiree Cafe on Maaveyo Magu, leaving two individuals injured and receiving treatment at IGMH. One of the victims is reported to be in serious condition.
Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as efforts continue to curb the recent rise in violent incidents.
