The Maldives Police Service has arrested a 49-year-old officer in connection with allegations of child sexual abuse. The suspect is accused of committing the offense while in a position of trust, according to official reports provided to the media.
The case was first brought to the attention of the authorities on June 1. Following the initial report, the suspect was apprehended and presented before the court, which granted a 30-day remand period for further investigation. The Maldives Police Service confirmed that the officer has been suspended without pay effective immediately.
The investigation is currently proceeding on two fronts. The Family and Child Protection Department is leading the criminal inquiry, while the Professional Standards Command is conducting an internal administrative investigation into the officer’s conduct.
