The Maldives Police Service has issued a clarification regarding a diving incident in Vaavu Atoll, confirming that one individual has been found deceased while four others remain missing. The update follows an earlier erroneous report which suggested that all five divers had perished.

Authorities received the initial report at approximately 13:45 on May 14, 2026, stating that five individuals who had departed from a safari vessel for a diving excursion were missing. During the subsequent search and rescue operation, one body was recovered from the sea.

In an official statement, the police attributed the initial misinformation regarding the death toll to a communication error occurring at the time of the report. They expressed their sincere apologies to the public and the media for the inaccuracy. Search efforts for the remaining four divers are currently ongoing without interruption, and authorities have pledged to share further updates as they become available.
