The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) is set to significantly bolster its internal organizational structure this Saturday by electing more than 2,500 members to various leadership positions across the country.

During a press conference, PNC Spokesperson Mohamed Firzul Abdulla Khaleel confirmed that the vetting process for candidates has been completed following the application deadline on June 30. The upcoming elections will focus on appointing constituency presidents, vice presidents, and leaders for the party’s women’s and youth wings, as well as steering committee heads.

Spokesperson Firzul highlighted that these internal elections represent a major milestone for the party. He emphasized that the primary responsibility of the 2,500 elected officials will be to facilitate the implementation of government policies and expand the party’s activities across the Maldives. Voting is scheduled to take place on 131 islands where the number of candidates exceeds the available seats.

In accordance with the party’s internal regulations, PNC members currently serving in the People’s Majlis will automatically assume the role of constituency presidents. Consequently, voting for the presidential post will only occur in constituencies where there is no sitting Member of Parliament.

The PNC has already published the voters’ list, based on Elections Commission records as of June 15, and has established a dedicated portal for handling complaints. The party aims to complete all constituency-level activities before the PNC National Congress, which is scheduled to take place from September 15 to 18.
