A number of People’s Majlis members are set to begin their studies in the upcoming semester at the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM), pursuing a degree in Sharia and Law. This initiative, aimed at enhancing the legal knowledge of lawmakers, was spearheaded by the Speaker of the Majlis, Abdulla Shahid.

Upon assuming office, Speaker Shahid engaged in consultations with IUM officials at the Majlis secretariat to explore ways to facilitate this opportunity. Following these discussions, information sessions were conducted to brief interested members on the program details and enrollment procedures.

According to sources within the Majlis, there has been a significant interest among members in pursuing legal education, with 23 members expressing intent to join the program. However, only 17 members met the eligibility criteria, while those who did not qualify have been given the option to enroll in a foundation course.

“When the opportunity was announced, many members, particularly those eager to strengthen their understanding of legal matters, showed keen interest. This initiative is of great importance to us,” said one Majlis member, who spoke on condition of anonymity as the program details have yet to be officially announced.

It remains uncertain whether the members’ classes will be conducted separately or integrated with the general student body at IUM. Furthermore, discussions are ongoing regarding whether the course fees will be covered under the government’s free degree scheme or financed through the People’s Majlis budget.

With this move, the Majlis aims to equip its members with a stronger foundation in Sharia and law, ensuring that they are well-prepared to contribute more effectively to the legislative process in the Maldives.
