Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, has announced that the introduction of full PayPal services in the Maldives is nearing completion. Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, the Minister assured the public that the wait for the popular online payment platform would soon be over.

The establishment of PayPal services remains a key electoral pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The government previously announced in October that Ooredoo Maldives had been appointed as the fintech partner to facilitate the platform’s integration within the local financial ecosystem.

Addressing concerns regarding the project’s timeline, Minister Saeed clarified that Ooredoo is currently in the final stages of system integration and technical testing. Once these phases are concluded, the service will officially launch, enabling Maldivians to utilize the platform’s full suite of features.

Currently, PayPal users in the Maldives are restricted to making outgoing payments, with no official mechanism to receive funds. The full activation of the service is expected to significantly benefit freelancers, small businesses, and the burgeoning digital economy by removing barriers to international transactions.
