Malé, Maldives – The Criminal Court has extended the remand of Nisha Rai, a 21-year-old Nepalese national, by an additional 15 days, in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged drug trafficking and possession.

Rai was initially taken into custody on 17 December. This extension marks multiple instances where her detention period has been prolonged since her initial arrest.

Investigation Details

The Nepalese national is reportedly residing in the Maldives illegally. Drugs were discovered at the premises where she was apprehended.

Rai has claimed she was not at the specific location where she was arrested and where the illicit substances were found, stating she was visiting a romantic partner there. However, police reported discovering her towel and a passport-sized photograph at the scene during their investigation.

In connection with the same case, three Maldivian individuals were also arrested from the same location as Rai.
