Former President Mohamed Nasheed has disclosed that the joint political initiative between himself, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and former President Abdulla Yameen is currently at an impasse. Speaking at a press conference, Nasheed noted that despite early discussions intended to align the three leaders’ political agendas, the momentum has significantly slowed.

The collaboration officially began on May 15, following a high-level meeting where the leaders agreed to a framework for cooperation. A specialized committee featuring representatives from each leader was subsequently formed. This committee, which included Eva Abdulla and Fayyaz Ismail for Nasheed, Mohamed Rashid Hussain and Ahmed Saleem for Solih, and Ismail Zariyand and Mohamed Maleeh Jamal for Yameen, has reportedly only met twice before progress ceased.

In addition to the stalled negotiations, Nasheed addressed internal dynamics within the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). As the recently elected Chairperson, Nasheed suggested that the individual holding the party’s chairmanship should not be eligible to contest the presidential ticket. This statement comes amid rumors that the MDP is considering constitutional amendments to formalize such a restriction.

Nasheed, who remains a vocal advocate for transitioning the Maldives to a parliamentary system of government, also touched upon local administrative disputes. He confirmed that the party is preparing to challenge the removal of the V. Thinadhoo Council President in court, arguing that the dismissal, triggered by a change in party affiliation, is legally untenable.
