Former President Mohamed Nasheed has asserted that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is capable of winning the 2028 presidential election in a single round, urging members to refrain from undermining the party’s strength.

Nasheed made these remarks during a gathering in G.Dh. Gadhdhoo, responding to recent comments by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. During a campaign event in Faresmaathodaa, Solih had argued that no single political party in the Maldives could secure the presidency without a coalition, noting that while the MDP has 60,000 members, over 90,000 additional votes are required to win an election.

Addressing these claims, Nasheed stated that defeating the current administration in 2028 would not be a difficult task if the party continues its current momentum. He explicitly rejected the necessity of seeking support from smaller entities like the Adhaalath Party or the Jumhooree Party.

“Do not view our success as something that can only be achieved by joining this or that group or by seeking help from others,” Nasheed said, referring to the party’s grassroots supporters as the ‘Yellow Army’ and the true engine of victory. He further noted that past coalitions resulted in MDP members being marginalized while government positions were distributed to smaller coalition partners.

Nasheed concluded by stating that claiming the MDP cannot win on its own is a form of “bad-mouthing” the party and only serves to weaken its standing in the eyes of the public.
