Former President and Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Mohamed Nasheed, has asserted that the current administration is unaware of the status of development projects across the Maldives due to the discontinuation of the ‘Isles’ tracking program.

Speaking at an MDP gathering, Nasheed claimed that numerous island-based projects have come to a standstill due to fiscal constraints. He suggested that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu remains disconnected from these realities, urging the President to visit the islands personally to witness the stalled progress first-hand.

Nasheed highlighted that the ‘Isles’ program, established during the 2008 MDP administration, was designed to record and monitor the specific details of every project in every island. He argued that the current government’s decision to halt this program has resulted in a significant information gap, leaving officials unable to provide accurate updates to the public.

The former President’s remarks come amidst growing concerns over transparency. Although the President’s Office recently claimed that 590 projects were completed over the past 32 months, it has reportedly failed to comply with Right to Information (RTI) requests seeking specific details on these initiatives. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICOM) had previously ordered the disclosure of this information within a 14-day window, a deadline that has since expired.

Nasheed further noted that while the government faces financial hurdles, it continues to obstruct local councils and private entities attempting to advance regional development. He stated that his office remains in direct contact with island councils to monitor the situation independently.
