Former President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed profound disappointment over the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) failure to organize any activities to mark International Workers’ Day this year.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, the former president highlighted that the MDP has historically been a champion for laborers’ rights and was instrumental in establishing May Day as a public holiday in the Maldives in 2006. Nasheed noted that it is deeply regrettable for the country’s largest opposition party to remain silent on a day that represents the very core values of its foundation.

Historically, the MDP has led large-scale rallies and marches in Male’ to advocate for the working class. However, political observers have noted a significant decline in the party’s grassroots activities following the internal fractures that led to Nasheed’s eventual departure from the party. Nasheed emphasized that advocating for workers’ rights is not just a tradition, but a fundamental principle that should not be overlooked.
