N. VELIDHOO – Seaplane services officially commenced in N. Velidhoo today, making it the third inhabited island in the Maldives to receive such a service under a government initiative to enhance national connectivity.

The introduction of the new service follows a pledge made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in July last year. At the time, President Muizzu announced that seaplane operations to Velidhoo would begin in January of the current year, citing the scheduled commencement of airport construction in N. Vihahfaru as a contributing factor.

Inauguration Ceremony

The service was inaugurated at a special ceremony officiated by Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen. The Ministry of Transport released a statement characterising the launch as a significant advancement in the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen and expand the Maldives’ air travel system.

According to the Ministry, the commencement of seaplane services is expected to provide a boost to Velidhoo’s tourism industry and offer substantial travel conveniences for the local populace.

National Connectivity Project

Velidhoo’s inclusion in the seaplane network falls under the “Connecting the Whole of Maldives” project. This initiative aims to improve accessibility across the archipelago. Within the same atoll, N. Fodhdhoo is already recognised for its contributions to local tourism.
