The Maldives Pension Administration Office (MPAO) has reopened applications for the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO). While the role was initially advertised in April, the office confirmed that the fresh call is intended to find a leader capable of spearheading the implementation of recent legislative reforms.
Appointed for a five-year term, the new CEO will be responsible for navigating significant structural changes aimed at strengthening the pension system. The deadline for applications has been set for 14:00 this coming Thursday.
The reforms, ratified last month by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, introduce several landmark changes. These include the collateralization of pension funds for housing loan down payments and allowing lump-sum withdrawals for individuals diagnosed with a terminal illness. Additionally, the new law introduces provisions for using pension savings to secure Hajj pilgrimage slots.
Furthermore, the amendments restrict basic pension eligibility for those earning more than the state-defined basic pension amount and for individuals holding elected state positions or employment within state-owned enterprises. The MPAO Board, in consultation with the Ministry of Finance, will oversee the regulations governing these new standards.
