Vilimale MP Mohamed Ismail has asserted that individuals responsible for the alleged sale of Maldivian waters will inherently remain apprehensive toward transparent governance. The lawmaker made these remarks during today’s parliamentary debate concerning the bill for leasing uninhabited islands and lagoons.

Ismail accused the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) of failing to acknowledge the merits of government-proposed legislation. He claimed the opposition is actively disseminating misinformation to deceive the public, characterizing such actions as a gross display of irresponsibility in the Majlis.

Highlighting the 2018–2023 administration under former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Ismail argued that the MDP is unsettled by the introduction of open and transparent procedures for leasing state resources. He emphasized that the proposed amendments are vital for ensuring that the leasing process remains within legal frameworks and yields maximum benefit for the citizens.
