The Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) has clarified that there is currently no scientific method to accurately predict the occurrence of earthquakes in advance. The statement was issued following the circulation of misinformation on social media platforms suggesting imminent seismic activity in the Maldives region.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the MMS dismissed these claims as baseless. The authority emphasized that while seismologists can identify regions with a high probability of seismic events over long durations, determining the exact time, date, or location remains scientifically impossible with current technology.

The MMS reassured the public that it maintains continuous monitoring of seismic activity around the clock. The office committed to providing immediate updates and alerts should any earthquake occur that poses a direct threat to the Maldivian archipelago.
