Minister of Education and Higher Education, Dr. Ismail Shafeeu, has urged Maldivian students to transition away from the prevailing culture of private tuition and take greater personal responsibility for their academic journey.

Addressing the first session of the Aruthaveringe Award 2025 ceremony held at CHSE-Hulhumalé, the Minister characterized the practice of attending four to six hours of tuition after school as a concerning habit. He noted that a primary government objective is to enhance the quality of instruction in schools to a level where the formal education system becomes the sole necessary source of learning.

Dr. Shafeeu further warned of the mental and physical health risks associated with spending entire days in academic settings. Referencing educational research, he emphasized the importance of time management, leisure activities, and family engagement, stating that a lack of social interaction at home can negatively affect a child’s cognitive development.

Highlighting the benefits of self-study, the Minister advised students from Grade 1 through Grade 12 to build self-confidence and independent learning skills. He also referenced the National Assessment of Learning Outcomes, calling for community-wide collaboration to improve student performance through increased engagement and interest.
