Mickail Ahmed Naseem, the Member of Parliament for Galolhu South and candidate for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson, has pledged to establish a formal mechanism ensuring local councillors have a significant voice within the party’s National Council.

Speaking as part of his internal election campaign, Mickail emphasized that councillors representing citizens at island and atoll levels must be directly heard within the party’s highest governing body. He argued that expanding their role in crucial decision-making processes is essential for the future growth and stability of the MDP.

The campaign has gained significant momentum with the endorsement of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. High-level associates of the former President are reportedly leading Mickail’s campaign efforts. During recent discussions regarding the party’s internal landscape, President Solih also noted that it might not be the ideal time for former President Mohamed Nasheed to contest elections.

Addressing political criticism, Mickail refuted allegations that he has engaged in activities to undermine the government. He reiterated that his primary objective remains the strengthening of internal party democracy and the empowerment of grassroots members and local representatives.
