The Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) has today provided assurances that the red alert issued for severe weather conditions in neighboring Sri Lanka will not result in a hazardous situation for the Maldives. Despite the proximity, officials clarified that the current atmospheric changes are localized to the Sri Lankan region.

Authorities in Sri Lanka issued the red alert due to forecasts of exceptionally strong winds and turbulent sea conditions, effective from 06:30 today until 10:30 tomorrow morning. In a statement addressing public concern, the MET Office confirmed that these weather patterns do not currently extend to the Maldivian archipelago.

However, the MMS has advised residents in the northern atolls to remain vigilant, as strong winds are projected for that region over the next five days. Conversely, weather in the central and southern atolls is expected to remain generally clear during this period.

The Maldives is currently experiencing the effects of the Southwest Monsoon (Hulhangu). Since the recent Eid holidays, several parts of the country have faced adverse weather, including rough seas and localized flooding caused by heavy rainfall.
