The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has scheduled a National Council meeting for next Monday to decide on the no-confidence motion against its Interim Chairperson, Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, widely known as Gapo.

The move follows a petition submitted to the National Council by party members expressing dissatisfaction with Gapo’s leadership. Tensions escalated during a celebration following the Local Council elections, where senior figures, including former President Mohamed Nasheed and former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail, were reportedly denied the opportunity to address the assembly.

Despite mounting pressure from party members calling for his resignation, Gapo has maintained a firm stance, stating that he has no intention of stepping down. Sources confirm that the upcoming National Council meeting will serve as the final platform to decide his fate within the party’s leadership.

The petition against Gapo further alleges that his decisions as Interim Chairperson are heavily influenced by external parties. Additionally, members have condemned the sudden dismissals of Legal Advisor Ahmed Maaroof and Deputy Chairperson Ibrahim Waheed, claiming these actions violated the party’s charter and were carried out without justifiable cause.
