The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced a nationwide protest scheduled for this Thursday, citing concerns over politically motivated dismissals of state-owned enterprise (SOE) employees and the suspension of island development projects.

This decision was finalized during the first National Council meeting chaired by former President Mohamed Nasheed following his return to the role of party chairperson. A resolution submitted by the MDP Secretariat alleges that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration is acting in violation of the law, causing significant hardship for the public.

The resolution highlights two primary grievances: the unfair termination of employees suspected of supporting the opposition and the cessation of infrastructure projects across the atolls. The party noted that several water, sewerage, and electricity projects, which were near completion under the previous government, have now been halted.

In response, the National Council unanimously approved a three-point action plan. This includes organizing nationwide demonstrations, collaborating with local island councils, and providing legal representation to employees who have lost their jobs due to political reasons.
