The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has reaffirmed its dominance in R. Alifushi by securing every available seat in the recent local council elections. This landslide victory solidifies the island’s reputation as an impregnable stronghold for the party, delivering a clear message to the current administration.

Ali Shahid, the MDP candidate for Council President, secured his position with a substantial majority of 62.61%, receiving 941 votes. The results represent a significant electoral setback for the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) within the constituency.

The MDP’s sweep extended across the entire council, with Abdus Samiu and Ali Rashid winning seats, while Latheefa Mohamed and Noorul Huda Mumthaz secured the seats reserved for women. Additionally, the party successfully captured the presidency and all member seats on the Women’s Development Committee (WDC), leaving no representation for the opposition.
