MALÉ, Maldives – Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced the completion of 85 metres of sheet-piling under the second phase of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu development project on the northern side of Malé. This milestone contributes to the comprehensive upgrade of the road network in the capital.

Current Progress and Upcoming Milestones

Land reclamation works are currently underway. MTCC has scheduled the completion of water and sewerage system upgrade works by the end of the upcoming week. Additionally, the construction of pavements on the building side, installation of drainage wells, and development of cable junctions are progressing and are also expected to be finalised by the end of next week.

Broader Project Scope and Expected Benefits

As part of the broader road development initiative, the Bazzaarumathi Road section, spanning 250 metres from Malé’s local market to North Harbour, is slated for development with asphalt paving. This segment will also involve a 6-metre outward extension of the existing quay wall to widen the road. MTCC anticipates that upon completion, the Bazzaarumathi area roads will feature two-way traffic, enhanced pedestrian safety, and improved flood mitigation, transforming them into modern thoroughfares.

The overarching Boduthakurufaanu Magu development project encompasses a total of 1,088 metres, extending from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to North Harbour. The first phase of this project, covering 140 metres, has already been completed. The government views these infrastructural enhancements as crucial for reducing congestion in Malé’s commercial harbour area and facilitating significant improvements in cargo transport and overall travel convenience.
