Malé, Maldives – The High Commission of India in Malé hosted a reception to commemorate the 77th Republic Day of India on 26 January 2026. The event took place at the Social Centre, Malé, with H.E. Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, attending as the Chief Guest.

The reception gathered over 500 distinguished guests, including senior Maldivian government ministers and functionaries, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives from the private sector, and other eminent dignitaries. The gathering aimed to celebrate India’s constitutional values and to reinforce the enduring partnership and people-to-people ties between India and the Maldives.

Minister Khaleel inaugurated a specially curated photo exhibition during the event. This exhibition marked 60 years of diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives, showcasing key milestones, high-level exchanges, and moments of close cooperation over the decades. In his address, Minister Khaleel discussed the multi-faceted and long-standing partnership between the two nations, acknowledging recent achievements such as the inauguration of Hanimadhoo International Airport.

In his welcome remarks, the High Commissioner of India underscored the significance of India’s Republic Day. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation with the Maldives, highlighting shared values of democracy, mutual respect, and people-centric development as foundational to their bilateral relationship.

The evening programme featured a cultural performance by a Qawwali group from India, which was well-received by the audience. Guests were also offered a culinary experience, with a presentation of Indian cuisine from various regions of the country, showcasing its diverse regional flavours.
