Malé, Maldives – Prices for oranges and bananas have significantly increased in Malé during the current Ramadan, with an orange now averaging MVR 15 and a kilogramme of bananas approximately MVR 60 in shops. The surge is primarily attributed to a substantial shortage in supply.

The cost of oranges was already elevated at the beginning of Ramadan. Reports indicate that the current average price for a single orange in Malé shops has reached MVR 15, while a kilogramme of bananas is now priced around MVR 60.

Supply Challenges and STO’s Response

Sources suggest that the extreme price hike is a direct consequence of insufficient supply failing to meet demand.

In contrast, the State Trading Organisation (STO) has maintained affordable pricing for a range of fruits and vegetables, including oranges and bananas. STO has also provided assurances regarding the consistent and uninterrupted availability of these essential items.
