ADDU CITY – Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, has officially launched its “Southern Connectivity” air service, establishing new air links between the four southernmost atolls of the archipelago. The service was introduced at a ceremony in Addu City today, with flights scheduled to commence next Sunday.

The new air service will connect Addu City, Fuvahmulah City, Gaafu Alifu Atoll, and Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, enhancing regional accessibility within the Maldives.

Service Introduction and Commencement

The “Southern Connectivity” service was formally inaugurated at a special ceremony held this afternoon at Gan International Airport in Addu City. The Ministry of Transport confirmed that scheduled flights under this initiative will begin on the coming Sunday, December 10, 2023.

Ministerial Statement on Benefits

Speaking at the launch event, Minister of Transport Mohamed Ameen expressed optimism regarding the new service. He stated his expectation that the connectivity would contribute to the convenience and prosperity of the residents across the four southern atolls.

Minister Ameen further elaborated, “This initiative addresses the essential needs of citizens. These flights are expected to provide significant relief to residents travelling for purposes such as education, employment, and particularly for medical treatment to hospitals located in Addu City and Thinadhoo (Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll).”

Operational Details and Fare Structure

For these inter-atoll flights, Maldivian will utilise Twin Otter aircraft. These aircraft, typically configured for seaplane operations, have been equipped with wheeled landing gear for runway operations.

Maldivian has publicly announced the fare structure for the “Southern Connectivity” flights, with prices ranging between MVR 500 and MVR 900.
