Maldives to Implement Container Scanners This Year, Says Home Affairs Minister

MALÉ, Maldives – The Maldivian government aims to acquire and commission a container scanner within the current year, Home Affairs Minister Ali Ihusan has announced. This initiative is designed to enhance border security and strengthen efforts against the illicit import of goods, particularly narcotics.

Speaking on state media regarding the Presidential Address, Minister Ihusan detailed improvements in Customs operations. He stated that all packages entering the Maldives are now subjected to scanning, a change from previous practices where packages arriving by air underwent only random screening. Upon the deployment of the new container scanner, large cargo containers entering the Maldives will not be cleared without comprehensive scanning.

The Minister affirmed the government’s commitment to reducing the volume of illegal drugs entering the Maldives. He acknowledged the diligent efforts of the Maldives Police Service in disrupting drug trade networks, noting that “Operation Alimag,” an initiative launched to apprehend drug traffickers, has been successful.

Regarding demand reduction, Minister Ihusan highlighted the priority of strengthening the treatment system for drug users. The primary focus in this area is the development of the National Drug Agency’s infrastructure. Additionally, the government has introduced amendments to relevant legislation as part of its comprehensive strategy to address the drug problem.
