Maldives to Establish Universal Lab Services Across All Islands by Year-End

Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has announced that comprehensive laboratory services will be available in all inhabited islands of the Maldives by the end of the current year. The initiative is a key component of the government’s broader health policy, which aims to decentralise and strengthen medical testing facilities nationwide.

Policy Background and Implementation

Speaking on “Tharujamaan”, a podcast produced by the President’s Office, Minister Nazim detailed the administration’s commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure across the atolls. He emphasised that a primary objective is to establish and fortify facilities capable of conducting various health tests, thereby ensuring access even in the most remote communities.

The Minister stated that upon the current government assuming office, 76 islands across the archipelago lacked access to any form of laboratory services. The initial phase of this healthcare expansion focused on implementing a “Point of Care” system in these specific islands, which enabled the provision of basic health tests. This objective, Minister Nazim confirmed, was achieved within the first year of the administration.

Establishment of Physical Laboratories

Minister Nazim further outlined that the President’s vision for the second year of the administration involved commencing the establishment of physical laboratories in all islands. He affirmed that by the close of this year, every island in the Maldives is projected to have a fully operational physical laboratory. These facilities will be adequately staffed with qualified lab technologists, ensuring they can provide a comprehensive range of commonly available laboratory services to the public.
