The Maldives and Russia have reached an agreement to expand air connectivity by introducing additional airline services between the two nations. This development follows a high-level meeting in Russia between the Maldivian Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen, and Russia’s State Secretary and Deputy Minister of Transport, Dmitry Zverev.

During the discussions, both officials focused on strengthening bilateral ties in the aviation sector. The Ministry of Transport confirmed that the agreement marks a significant step in facilitating more travel options, though specific details regarding the new airlines have yet to be disclosed.

Currently, Aeroflot maintains regular scheduled flights to the Maldives, while several other Russian carriers operate frequent charter services. Despite regional geopolitical shifts that have affected some Middle Eastern routes, Russian flight operations have remained resilient, providing a steady influx of visitors to the archipelago.

Russia continues to be a primary source market for the Maldivian tourism industry. Official statistics indicate that nearly 200,000 Russian tourists have visited the Maldives so far this year, underscoring the critical importance of enhanced air links to sustain the nation’s economic growth.
