Data from the Ministry of Finance’s latest ‘Weekly Fiscal Development’ report indicates that the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing have emerged as the highest-spending government bodies as of July 16, 2026.

Total state expenditure for the period reached MVR 35,078.3 million (MVR 35.08 billion), representing a significant increase from the MVR 26,372.3 million recorded during the same timeframe in 2025. This reflects an overall surge of MVR 8,706.0 million in government spending year-on-year.

The Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Skills recorded the highest sectoral spending at MVR 2,715.9 million, an increase of MVR 783.0 million from the previous year. Following closely, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing spent MVR 2,212.6 million, marking an increase of MVR 424.6 million compared to 2025 figures.

Additionally, the Ministry of Health, Family, and Welfare saw a notable rise in budget utilization, with expenditures totaling MVR 1,344.9 million. This is an increase of MVR 336.2 million over the MVR 1,008.7 million spent during the corresponding period last year.
