President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has hailed the Maldives’ election to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2027–2029 term as a historic milestone and a testament to the international community’s profound trust in the nation. This marks the first time the Maldives will serve on the council in its 60-year history as a UN member state.

In a statement shared via social media platform X, President Muizzu emphasized that this achievement reflects a growing confidence in the Maldives’ proactive role on the global stage. As a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), the President noted that the Maldives is uniquely positioned to understand the urgent challenges posed by climate change, economic barriers, and the necessity of sustainable development.

The President highlighted that this seat provides a vital platform to advocate for the rights and aspirations of other developing nations and small island states. He reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to collaborating with the international community to accelerate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and foster a more equitable, resilient global system capable of overcoming future crises.
