In a move aimed at fiscal prudence, the Maldivian government announced today that Eid al-Fitr lighting displays will be limited exclusively to cities this year. This decision marks a departure from the broader celebration previously seen across various islands.

The directive emerged from a Cabinet committee established by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, formed in response to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Speaking at a press conference today, Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, who chairs the committee, confirmed that following extensive Cabinet consultations, the lighting of Eid decorations in residential islands would not proceed.

Consequently, the upcoming Eid festivities will feature decorative lights in only five designated cities. Minister Khaleel further clarified that even within these urban areas, the lighting installations would be restricted to specific locations, underscoring the government’s commitment to significantly reducing expenditures for this year’s celebrations.

The practice of illuminating islands with special Eid lights was a recent initiative introduced by the current administration upon assuming power. This year’s decision reflects a strategic effort to manage public spending more effectively.
