The Maldives is seeing a significant rise in measles cases, with 17 new infections reported in the past week alone. This marks an increase from the 10 cases recorded during the previous week, according to the latest data from health authorities.

The current outbreak, which began in May of this year, has seen a steady climb in figures. With the latest reported cases, the total number of individuals infected in the country has now reached 243.

In response to the growing trend, the Ministry of Health is intensifying its efforts to contain the virus. Authorities are prioritizing the administration of measles vaccines to those who have not yet completed their two-dose regimen. This vaccination drive was recently bolstered by a donation of vaccine doses from the government of India.

According to the Health Protection Agency (HPA), 16,045 people have been vaccinated under the current program so far. Health experts emphasize that measles is a highly contagious airborne virus, with a nearly 90% transmission rate among unvaccinated individuals in close contact with an infected person.

The infectious period for the virus begins approximately four to five days before the characteristic rash appears and continues for four to five days after the onset of the rash. Public health officials continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and ensure all vaccinations are up to date.
