The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has revealed that bank credit and loans issued to private individuals and businesses grew by 16 percent as of April 2026. This indicates an upward trend compared to the 14 percent growth recorded in the preceding month of March.
According to official statistics from the central bank, total loans disbursed during this period reached MVR 34 billion. The MMA report highlights that credit facilities expanded across all major sectors of the Maldivian economy, including construction, tourism, personal finance, real estate, and trade.
The construction sector recorded the most significant annual growth at 20 percent. However, the tourism industry remains the largest recipient of private sector credit, accounting for 34 percent of the total loan portfolio. The MMA attributed the rise in tourism-related financing to the development of new resorts, extensive renovations of existing properties, and the expansion of the guesthouse sector.
