Personal loan disbursements by Maldivian banks and financial institutions have reached a total of MVR 9.23 billion, according to the latest economic data released by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).
Statistics as of the end of April 2026 indicate that total credit issued to the private sector reached MVR 51.7 billion. This represents an increase of approximately MVR 892 million compared to the MVR 50.8 billion recorded at the end of March 2026. This upward trend follows a steady climb from the MVR 48.3 billion reported at the close of 2025, with personal loans now ranking as the third-largest credit category.
The tourism sector, the primary pillar of the Maldivian economy, continues to receive the highest volume of financial backing. By the end of April, total loans issued to the tourism industry rose to MVR 14.1 billion.
The construction sector also demonstrated significant growth during the same period, officially surpassing the MVR 10 billion threshold to reach MVR 10.01 billion. This marks a notable increase from the MVR 9.5 billion recorded in March.
